Summertime and socializing can be easy

My childhood summertime afternoons always included solitary time with  library books while I waited for the magic hour that my mom would drop me and my best friend off at the local pool to socialize and exercise.  We would gather other kids to play Marco-Polo or dive for coins.   About an hour later our fathers would finish their work and cart our wet and well chlorinated bodies home in time for dinner.   We often fell asleep in the car on the way home exhausted from the exercise and southern summer heat.

Now, summer time is always the time of year that I just want to take a nap in the middle of the afternoon.

Or read a good book or work on a word puzzle.  So I made one.  You’re welcome.

Usually my business as an entertainer slows down in the summer as well.  People are on vacation or busy running their kids around to camps.  And while I usually do lip print parties for girls night, family reunions and some social society events, it’s a not the fast pace I do normally from September through June.

This year is different.

Many of us have already taken a five month stay-cation and are starting to get little antsy.  Social media is littered with inquires about where to go eat or pick up food and even more complaints about going out and seeing people not wearing masks.

Ugh.  Texas humidity and a mask just don’t seem appealing to me.

Yet, I still want to see friends.

I still want to have some fun.

And I want to be responsible.

Most of all.  I don’t want to get sick.

Since the statistics and information are constantly changing, it’s hard to know if it’s really safe to go outside your space for socializing.   Some people easily don masks and make the best of it.  If you are an introvert, or feel that your health could be compromised or your friends this way, it’s a little harder to get together for quality time.  Vitamin F (friends and family) may be lacking.  But it’s important that we try to have social contact with others to improve our health.

Research shows that connecting with family, friends and the wider community – are important for emotional and mental well-being.

The more we create and participate socially even those virtual interactions, can increase feelings of happiness and self-worth.  They also provide opportunities to learn new skills and information which is good for our brains and memory retention.
Every day, I am getting calls from women wanting lip print parties for birthday celebrations, reunions or just an evening with a small group of close friends.
I can tell that they are the “fun ones” of their group. That friend who is always thinking of something special to do for others or the one that comes up with the perfect theme for an amazing charity event that everyone talks about for weeks on end.

Since everyone is getting used to using virtual conferencing, it’s easy to pull everyone together for some fun.  Having an activity for the group to do together can be a wonderful distraction, create friendly competition and give people time to escape all the other things going on in their personal life (that probably everyone doesn’t really want to hear about anyway).

Perks virtual parties!

  • You don’t have to clean the house or bathrooms.  Dog and kid toys can stay put.
  • No worrying about feeding high maintenance friends.  Everyone brings their own drink and eats.  Give them something to talk about.
  • Come as you are.  No one needs to get fancy on virtual.  A bright top, some earrings, a little lipstick.  You’re good!  No one will know if you choose to wear shorts, sweat pants or flip flops off camera.
  • Your friends and family can live far away and Zoom in for an hour.  If you forgot that someone drives you crazy – then you only have to deal with them for a short amount of time.  It’s easier than family Thanksgiving dinner or a cocktail party!

Virtual parties give you quality time with those special people in your life.  And that’s priceless!
