One of the most fun fortune-telling gigs I did last year was at Wild Detectives book store in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas, TX. Author Will Clarke wanted some live interactive entertainment for his book signing. Will is not only a brilliant writer but one of the most creative clients I have worked with in a long time.
His book “The Neon Palm of Madame Melancon” is set in New Orleans and features a palm reader who has disappeared suddenly. So when Will asked me to do the job I was very excited about the possibilities.
Now Wild Detectives is not a big bookstore, but it is extremely hospitable and serves up some of the best coffee you’ll find in the metroplex as well as alcoholic beverages. And there are plenty of places to sit and read or write like Will did for those who want a creative haven to hang out.

The evening of our event was really humid almost like Will had ordered weather to reflect the New Orleans setting of his novel. The place was packed to standing room and I was busy the entire night working the crowd and reading palms and handing out lottery tickets who had a lucky sign in their hands. Will’s fans were wonderful and waited patiently for their readings and I was able to read most of the guests in the two hours of the event.
While Will signed books I provided that lagniappe that guests weren’t expecting. And I was lucky enough to get my own signed copy.
