Every now and then, I’m invited to an event that feels pure magic — not just because of what I do, but because of the heart behind it. Years ago, I was part of one of those special celebrations: a Halloween party thrown by a local pediatrician for all her patients and their families.
She rented out the ballroom of a country club
The typical ballroom was transformed into a wonderland for kids. There were face painters, balloon artists, caricature artists, magic shows, animal acts, sing-alongs, and an endless buffet of kid-friendly food. Cotton candy, popcorn, cookies — the works!
When I was invited the first year, they wanted something new that could engage the older tweens — the ones who were starting to think they were “too cool” for face paint. I suggested walk-around fortune-telling with palm readings.
I came dressed head-to-toe in fortune-teller style
I pulled out all my sparkly jewelry and wore a bright skirt with little mirrors stitched in the fabric. A red turban with a palm pendant on my forehead completed my look. I even had a tiny crystal ball tucked in my pocket. I wandered through the ballroom offering mini palm readings to kids and parents. The first year, people weren’t sure what to make of me, but once they saw what I was doing — light, fun, and a little mystical — they loved it!
Parents enjoyed seeing how their children’s traits showed up in their hands, and the tweens absolutely ate it up. They listened in, rated my readings, and came back for more. By the second year, people remembered me. By the third, I could barely make it across the room without being swarmed by excited kids eager to have their fortunes read and make a wish on my crystal ball.
When the doctor retired, the tradition ended —
but that party has stayed in my memory as one of the most joyful and thoughtful events I’ve ever worked. It wasn’t just entertainment; it was a heartfelt way for her to say thank you to her patients and their families.
If you’re ever planning a Halloween event or thinking of ways to bring people together, take a page from her book: celebrate your community, sprinkle in a little wonder, and let everyone — from kids to parents — feel like the magic is meant for them.
